Three Weeks in Buenos Aires – Ultimate Travel Guide

buenos aires

Buenos Aires is oh so fabulous. Our month there truly re-sparked my love for travel. Don’t get me wrong I always love traveling but after months of working our way through Central America with similar cuisine, activities, and landscape, it was a whole new world. This big trendy city captured my heart and made me want to be porteña!

buenos aires

So what are porteñas or porteños? Porteño is the name people from Argentina give to people from Buenos Aires. Because the people in here are unlike the rest of the Argentinean people. They are sassy, stylish, and downright fabulous. Thus explaining why it is often referred to as the Paris of South America. I had been wanting to visit Buenos Aires for years and it was everything I hoped it would be and more! This city was the highlight of our trip to South America and we will be back for sure.

Getting Around Buenos Aires

The whole city has an easy to navigate and affordable metro called Sube. We also used Uber often and regular cabs a few times. Even with all of the easy to use and affordable transportation one of our favorite parts of the city was being able to just walk around. Each neighborhood had its own feel but the entire city seemed safe and comfortable. Even when we stayed a bit outside of the tourist area the streets were clean and safe. I highly recommend walking around and just taking the city in on foot when possible.

Where to Stay in Buenos Aires

We spent quite a bit of time in Buenos Aires so we moved around a lot and got to experience a lot of the unique neighborhoods. Each place met a different need for us. Some parts of the trip were focused on working and other parts on having fun and playing tourist with our friend Alexis who visited us there.

Zola Hostel in Palermo

We arrived a day earlier than planned so we grabbed this cheap hostel in Palermo for one night. It was no frills and pretty basic but we basically slept the whole time after our red-eye flight.

Airbnb in Caballito

We booked this apartment in a residential neighborhood of Buenos Aires for our work week. We went on a full digital nomad bender. For working nonstop this apartment had every amenity we could want and really felt like home. I also cooked several meals in the kitchen and we loved sipping our Yerba Mate on the big balcony. It is also located right above a sushi spot which is ideal when you want to knock out as many blog post as possible!

Sheraton Libertador in Retiro

We stayed here for one night in between apartments. It was a nice hotel and the location to downtown was top notch.

VRBO in Palermo

Palermo is the place to be in the city! This VRBO rental was a nice enough home base while we wandered Palermo, however, I recommend something more in the heart of Palermo Soho as this was a bit on the outskirts.

Airbnb in San Telmo

This place was amazing! San Telmo has such charm and this Airbnb was a dream! It had a wine cellar that doubled as a cinema and a beautiful courtyard. It is a very unique apartment and is in a perfect location that was walkable to almost everything and the host was super cool. Totally recommendable.

Airbnb in Recoleta

We wrapped up our time in Buenos Aires with another work week. This apartment was a nice and cozy. It wasn’t as big as our other one but I it was well equipped and in a central location.

Where to Drink in Buenos Aires

This is a city that doesn’t sleep. Well not during “traditional” hours at least. They sleep in, take late afternoon siestas, dine at 9 pm, and then hit the bar. The nightlife scene is big and is a class act. From wine to craft cocktails and even a beer scene there is something for everyone. Check out our favorite nightlife recommendations and Buenos Aires cocktail bars here.

We will be back to visit Buenos Aires and hopefully soon! It was such an awesome experience to live the porteña lifestyle among these fabulous people. We stayed for three weeks but we could have easily stayed longer. There is something magical about this city.
